Winter cat houses

IN JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2023, THE GGI UPDATED THE PROJECT OF WINTER CAT HOUSES

11 January 2023

With the arrival of winter, the need for cat sheds has increased, so that stray cats living outside do not freeze their paws, have a snag where to cuddle and eat. Vilnius City Municipality, unable to meet the need for houses for stray cats, our organization’s volunteers Arvydas Vitkevicius and Mindaugas Ukoer took it upon themselves to help homeless animals and the workshop Padirbtuves of our friends  took up the crafting of cat houses.

Members of our community who responded to the ad also joined to help them. The company repeatedly chose, examined the drawings and carried out construction work on the cathouses, and later installed them in places agreed with the municipality. During this renewed project, volunteers built and installed 8 houses.

The project did not went without curiosity – one house was stolen. After announcing the theft on Facebook, the house was discovered by civil society, and our volunteers returned it to the place, only anchored it more.

THE GGI CARRIED OUT A PROJECT TO HELP STRAY CATS IN VILNIUS “WINTER CAT HOUSES”

21 October 2015

“Winter cat houses” is a project carried out by the GGI, during which a project was prepared and agreed with Vilnius City Municipality, and houses for stray cats were made and built according to it in the courtyards of apartment buildings, in places of feeding cats approved by the municipality.

This social project aimed to solve in an integrated way several problems rarely discussed in society – the care of stray cats in the yards, the increase in the employment of persons serving sentences in Lithuanian prisons, and involving students in public benefit activities. The aim of the project was to integrate the efforts of business, public organizations, prisons and schools in creating wooden houses for stray cats.

Project partners: aukok.lt, Vilnius City Municipality, Lukiskes Interrogation Isolator and Vilnius schools.

The procedure for feeding and caring for stray cats is established by the Rules of Keeping Animals in the Territory of Vilnius City Municipality (hereinafter referred to as the Rules). Detail information can be found in the Section IV of the Rules, and here we present some essential facts:

  • Stray cats can be fed and/ or special houses for them can be built only in places selected and approved by the Municipality.
  • A municipal permit is issued to a specific person (or several individuals together) in a specific place to care for stray cats.
  • The person (persons) responsible for feeding cats are also obliged to take care of the health of cats and sterilization/castration.
  •  Equipping a place for feeding cats under the balcony is possible only with the written consent of the surrounding residents of the apartments.
  • The place for feeding cats should be neat, clean, in no case do not lay rags, bedding and other fabric bedding for animals for hygiene reasons. Straw is best suited for this.
  • If you want to build a house (a cathouse), you need to coordinate its location and drawing with the municipality. If you want to get a drawing of the house held by the GGI, which has already been approved by the municipality, click: HERE

The castration programs of stray cats are coordinated and controlled by the Municipality Administration (852197930).

During the project, 45 long-term winter cathouses were built in Vilnius City.
